Charlestown Peninsula was the site of the first key Revolutionary War battle – the Battle of Bunker Hill (now The Bunker Hill Monument) on June 17, 1775. Charlestown is the oldest neighborhood in Boston, incorporated as a town in 1628, and incorporated as a city in 1847. They came in family groups rather than as isolated individuals and were motivated chiefly by a quest for freedom to practice their Puritan religion. The settlement increased in size to about 20,000 people during what’s known as the Great Migration from 1620 to 1640.
